Caledonian MacBrayne is a government company operating under the
Secretary of State for Scotland. It was formed by the
amalgamation of the Clyde Steam Packet Company and MacBraynes -
the former operated ferry services on the Firth of Clyde while
the latter provided the services to the Hebridean Islands off the
West Coast of Scotland. Even today, although the company has one
name, there is still a recognised division between the Clyde
fleet and the Western Isles fleet!
The Caledonian MacBrayne fleet today consists of 29 ships - 12 major vessels, 11 double-ended ferries, 6 bow-loading ferries and 1 passenger-only vessel. The fleet is relatively modern, with only one vessel dating from the sixties (and soon to be sold). CalMac have more vessels sailing under the British flag than any other company. All vessels in the current fleet were built for Caledonian MacBrayne (or its predecessor companies) in the U.K., mostly in Scotland; all vessels are registered in Glasgow.
